Martin Luther Lutheran Church's women's group got its start when a handful of women met one Saturday to make prayer shawls. Happy with how fun it was to craft together, they decided to next make no-sew fleece blankets for the local social service store. While knotting, one woman exclaimed, "I feel so knotty!" And the name stuck.

Since then, the Knotty Ladies have become the unofficial "women's group" of the church, combining their love of crafting with love of service. Every year, the Knotty Ladies host fundraising events and sales for charity and church renovation, enjoy tea parties and craft gatherings, and participate in charity walks. And they are always looking for new people and new ideas!

Here's a look at the fun and fundraising the Knotty Ladies host every year . . . 

St. Patrick's Day Shindig

Who says St. Patrick's Day can't be celebrated in a church fellowship hall? Every year, the Knotty Ladies transform the church into an Irish party and provide homemade Irish food, drinks, and games. A live and silent auction make it our biggest fundraising event of the year! Our earnings have helped our church youth group go to conventions, fund church renovations, and enable One Good Meal to provide shut-ins meals during the week. 

Blankets for the Cold

Every quarter, the Knotty Ladies meet on a Saturday morning to tie no-sew fleece blankets and enjoy potluck fellowship. To date, we have made and donated over 200 blankets to Metro Lutheran Ministries and Lee's Summit Social Services. This year we will add Lutheran World Relief's aid to Syrian refugees to the list of recipients. 

Themed Dinners

The fun doesn't stop with our tea parties. Each year the Knotty Ladies participate in themed dinner gathering, such as a mystery dinner or a Lenten soup meal before worship. Seed money for these events is often underwritten by grants compliments of Thrivent Financial; proceeds always go back to the community! 

High Tea Time

Every year we enjoy our annual planning meeting at a local tea house. We also host a Father's Day Brunch for the men of our congregation.

Charity Walks

The Knotty Ladies are also dedicated to participating in local charity events, often chosen because they have special meaning to people within the congregation. This year we helped raise funds for the National MS Society through Walk MS!

Christmas Store

Putting their love of handmade wares to use, the Knotty Ladies spend the fall months preparing items to sell at their annual Christmas Store, where they sell handmade boutique items and gifts. 100% of the earnings go to local charities, such as One Good Meal and Hillcrest Transitional Housing.
